Herd Sires
Back in 1988 the search was on for what type of llama
we wanted
to raise. After looking at all the llama
sale catalogs out there,
the decision was made to concentrate on small imported
llamas.
We quickly fell in love with a newly imported adorable
Chilean
female, and brought her home.
We named her Lanosa.
Lanosa was conceived in Chile during
quarantine and born in Brazil. We also
bought her mother,
Pachamamita, as we felt any llama that could
carry a pregnancy
through all of quarantine must be of sturdy stock. We
discovered
through bloodtyping that Lanosa’s
father was the
prepotent sire,
Top Flight, who she resembles quite
remarkably in looks. Top
Flight
is known for his presence and his offspring.
When looking for a smaller male to breed Lanosa to,
we sought
out Senior Bolivia, a Bolivian import, with
long, drapey wool. We
also aquired Lanosa’s sister, Bonita,
a daughter of Chilean
Blanco Lobo. Lobo
was said to have the best disposition of any
herd sire. Bonita gave birth to Matero’s
Sombra, Carbonero’s
mother,
who was bred to Senior Bolivia.
Pachamamita was bred to Santiago
Amigo, another full Chilean
also known to have a wonderful disposition. Her
daughter,
Pinta Pecosa (Speckled Freckles) was bred to Strawberry
Field,
a Chilean Appaloosa sire, who is the
father of Opaloandino
Strawberry Moon.
Pachamamita was also bred to Senior
Boliva. This resulted in
the birth of Celestina,
once called, ‘Ms Wonderful Wool’ by
spinners. Celestina
was bred to Chilean
Blanco Lobo and Cocoa
Rico Lobo was born with his
daddy’s good looks and personality.
Chilean Matero was one of the youngest of the
Chilean imports.
He is our senior herd
sire. His offspring tended to be smaller,
with curly wool and fantastic tail
sets. A high percentage of his
offspring have been female!
Mr Bear is an older Bolivan import who has come here
to spend
his retirement. His offspring
has his great disposition and are
very wooly.
Bolivian Top Banana
came here and spent a short time breeding
before my vet fell in love with him
and just had to have him. His
offspring are the smallest yet and
love people, as he does.
